s not disheartening enough for NHL fans, they also lost their number one defenseman to free-agency, Jay Bouwmeester.  The club has struggled to find the playoffs throughout their existence, seeping in only 3 times since their inaugural season in 1993.  With all of this negativity surrounding the Panthers, can they find a way to beat  Jokerit Helsinki on international ice?

Jay Bouwmeester got his wish on Tuesday; a long-term contract worth a handsome sum.  After having his rights traded last Saturday from Florida to the Flames for defenseman Jordan Leopold and a third round pick, Bouwmeester met with Calgary management all week but finally came to a deal just before the deadline.

ble asset, but missed the playoffs just a short month later.  Irony is a sick joke.

Jay Bouwmeester became one of the top stories during the deadline, but ended up staying put in order to help for the playoff run.  The problem is Bouwmeester's open-ended thoughts to the media.  He was asked just before the deadline by the Florida Sun-Sentinel what the likelihood of him returning in a Panthers jersey would be for the 2009-10 campaign.

t, the 2009 NHL Entry Draft could be very interesting for the Ducks.

-    Jay Bouwmeester sees himself in a strange situation in Florida.  Trading Bouwmeester gives Panthers fans a bad message; yes we are in 6th place in the East, but we are going to trade arguably our best player.  But keeping Bouwmeester could mean the Panthers get zero compensation for him when he goes to another team in July.  Panthers GM Jacques Martin is in a sticky situation, but sees it fit to keep Bouwmeester and allow his fans to enjoy the playoffs a little more.  After the decision to keep the young defenseman, Martin might then decide to trade disgruntled defenseman Nick Boynton, who recently had strong words with Head Coach Pete DeBoer, which caused him to be sent home from their road trip last week.

can land a Chris Pronger from Anaheim or a Jay Bouwmeester from the Panthers and lock them up for a few seasons, this deal may be worth looking at.  But if they plan on getting someone to help with this season alone, trading a player and hurting the rising chemistry on this roster may not be a smart move for the coming seasons.
