Barret Jackman

d on NHL.com) was that Capitals GM Mike McPhee was talking with Blues' GM Larry Pleau about bruiser Barret Jackman.  A deal seemed imminent until it was announced that Jurcina was brought in from Columbus for a sixth-round pick approximately ten minutes before the deadline.  It was announced a half hour later that the club also brought in Joe Corvo from the Hurricanes in exchange for defenseman Brian Pothier and an undisclosed draft pick.

King and Alexander Steen and defenseman Barret Jackman all on injury reserve, the club only has 22 players on the roster; one less than what the NHL allows on any team.  But in order to really shake up the lineup, management would need to send some players down or put someone on waivers.

the season, the Blues have plenty to talk about.  So lets get started...

Defenseman Barret Jackman sprains ankle; goes on IR (per Jeremy Rutherford).

Jackman will have to miss at least seven days, according to NHL injury reserve stipulations.  The Blues have claimed that this injury is “week to week.”  Jackman was a -1 to start the season, while posting 2 assists.

Louis hockey land though.

Barret Jackman was not one of the strongest links for the Blues last season.  He ate up the better portion of minutes played on the club, but was not impressive by any means.  His knack of getting out of position to make a big hit or lackluster passing abilities need to improve if this club is to make the playoffs for the second straight season.  Blues management claimed all season long that Jackman was playing injured, so hopefully a healthier Jackman will make a better Jackman.

With Johnson back in the lineup, could we see Brewer and Barret Jackman's time deplete?

When the St. Louis Blues drafted Barret Jackman 17th overall in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, they thought that they were getting something special.  With Al MacInnis aging and Chris Pronger making All-Star caliber paychecks, the team knew that a young guy had to be brought in to step in and take charge.  Jackman had a great season with the Regina Pats of the WHL in 2000-01, and continued that strong play in St. Louis the following season.  After winning the Calder Trophy as Rookie of the Year that season, the future was looking bright for the tough defenseman.  But things can go sour as quickly as they get sweet.

Louis jumped on a 3-1 series lead, led by veteran defenseman Al MacInnis and Calder Trophy winner Barret Jackman.  But the Blues saw their playoff hopes end in a horrible downward spiral, when they lost three straight to Canucks captain Markus Naslund (who recorded 14 points in 14 playoff games that post-season) and the rest of the Vancouver crew.  The only player that truly showed up for St. Louis was veteran center Doug Weight, who scored thirteen points in the seven game series.

the ability to stay in the play.  The only question mark is the play of supposed #1 defenseman Barret Jackman.  Barret is still leading the team in active time-on-ice per game with 23:29 average minutes played.  He is still unable to move the puck in a way that a $3.62 million defenseman should.  Sunday in Columbus, Barret had the puck behind his net and was heavily covered by three Blue Jacket players.  Instead of dumping the puck to the side boards or skating the other way around the net to try and draw them off, he threw it right up the middle and it hit off one of the Blue Jacket players.  Luckily, the player lost handle of the puck and Jackman was able to poke it free to another Blues player coming back to help. A #1 defenseman should know better.  He has to improve his play if he is going to continue to play against top lines in the NHL.

forwards are being left open in front of the net, as well as given free range behind the net.  Barret Jackman in particular has played better as of late, but had a horrid start defensively to start the season.  He has not taken the body like he used to before his shoulder surgery far back in the summer of 2004.  He has been hitting more and staying in position better, although he still ranks tied for last on the team in plus/minus with a -14
